Designing a Concept for Martin Audio

To advance our CAD skills we were set a project to design a piece of audio equipment for a particular environment and using the stylistic influences of a company of our choice.

I decided to design for a club environment and chose the company Martin Audio. I used the hard, industrial, stylistic elements seen both in Martin Audio’s designs, and in a huge number of clubs today most notably Matter at the O2.

My final design ST8CK is a series of stackable cubes which can rotate to throw the sound in different directions. Each speaker locks onto the next using a mechanism which allows them to rotate 360 degrees but can only be placed onto or taken off the next speaker at two location points. This along with the additional security of base plates which can be permanently fixed to the floor or ceiling mean that the speakers are very stable.

The design functionally allows the sound waves to be distributed throughout the club however the user intends, and can be used to create a sound wall so that different sounds can be distributed into each room. As well as being functional the rotational aspect of the ST8CKĀ  transforms the speakers into a visual piece, the different angles achieved by rotating the cubes are aesthetically pleasing.
